The newly rehoused Kinoptik lenses have arrived and make a welcome addition to Vantage’s extensive collection of vintage glass. Alexander Bscheidl, Managing Director of Vantage Paris, initiated the rehousing project because he felt that the lenses were missing from the French market and needed to be brought back. Thus, he took the steps necessary to make it a reality.
Zack Spiger, Director/Cinematographer recently took the Kinoptik lenses to Chinon in the Loire River Valley for the first field-testing. The crew worked hard to gain access to many heritage sites in the area because they knew this project was special not only to Vantage but to French cultural identity. They wanted to connect these historically rich locations with Kinoptik’s over sixty years at the center of French cinema. The new housings provide cinematographers with the first opportunity to use this lenses with modern cameras, and they performed beautifully. Zack shot in varied lighting conditions to see how the lenses would react and flare, and the results were stunning.
They brought four cameras: an Aaton Penelope (2-perf), an Arri 435 Xtreme (4‑perf), an Arri Alexa XT, and a Red Weapon. Sam Clark at Kodak supplied them with Vision 3 5213 200T and Vision 3 5219 500T film stock. A few hundred feet of the now discontinued Fuji Vivid 500T 8547 from Zack’s remaining stock was also shot. Film Factory in Paris did the film processing and scanning.
The lenses will be presented for the first time at Micro Salon Paris 2016, and test footage can be seen below.
