Vantage PSU: High End Video Assist System

Several feature films from Roman Polanski's Oliver Twist to Rachid Bouchareb's Oscar nominated Indigenes Days of Glory have been shot using Vantage Film's PSU.

In the past five years, many high-profile productions, thousands of commercials and several feature films from Roman Polanski's Oliver Twist to Rachid Bouchareb's Oscar nominated Indigenes Days of Glory have been shot using Vantage Film's PSU as the preferred high end video system on the set.

Based on this vast experience Vantage Film now provides a new and enriched release of its highly acclaimed Video Assist System. Features like Scene/Take-Labeling, Frame Line Generator or Multiple-Frame Print add up to a first-rate user experience on the set.

Vantages PSU has always aimed to combine a maximum of functional features, throughput efficiency and the easiest user interface imaginable.

Now the PSU‑2Plus extends this intuitive approach to the whole production process on the set:

Peter Martin, Managing Director Vantage Film

"We carefully listened to those who worked with the PSU on the set and improved the PSUs usability to fit their needs even better."

  • Use the automatic take labelling function to name each take with its corresponding scene/take number in the script. For each shooting day a report is automatically produced and made available over the digital interface.
  • With the Frame Line Generator you can display up to six different aspect ratios at the same time (1.33, 14:9, 1.66, 16:9, 1.85, 2.40). Every frame line can be individually designed, Zoom or Mask can be directly applied to them.
  • If you are shooting with the Vantage Lector system, use the new footage counter which will always show you the remaining film stock in your cameras.
  • The PSU‑2Plus allows you to produce DVDs with your shot takes. It is also possible to download takes as MPEG-files to your computer.
  • Features like Auto-Playback-Mute, Zoom-Out, On-Touch-Hide-or- Delete or Variable Sound Speed ease your work on the set.

Post-Production Effects: Get a Whole New Experience

Up until now, the rise of CGI and the progress of digital effects in postproduction have made it almost impossible to envision the final results of a shooting. With the new PSU‑2Plus, post production starts right on the set:

  • Create overlays with two running layers or with one running layer and one frozen image. The frozen image can be designed out of three different snapshots using the Vantage freeze image designer. Images can be up and downloaded using the digital interface of PSU‑2Plus.
  • Use Multiple-Frame-Print for previewing "dream or action sequences" shot at lower camera speeds and multiple printed at the laboratory to slow down the action. Find the correct multiplication factor for the lab. You can visualize your imagination right before the lab starts to copy your frames several times.
  • The new PSU‑2Plus allows you to change several image parameters, such as brightness, contrast or gamma correction. With chroma keying you can eliminate colors. This is helpful when you are using overlays. Changing each color channel allows you to preview the color grading post production result.
  • Simulate time laps starting at 0.1fps according to the speed range of the new Arriflex 435 Extreme or preview slow motion up to 1250fps and combine it with speed ramping.

Vantage Films new PSU‑2Plus has undergone extensive test runs and has already been used successfully in a number of productions. DoPs and video operators alike consider it to be the most reliable and advanced video-assist-system on the market.
