The Bethke Effect Filters come in a set of ten.

Hollywood, CA, July 20, 2012 – Vantage Film is putting the finishing touches on the Bethke Effect, a series of ten new high quality effects filters that react with light in unique ways.

The company invited input from director of photography Daniel Pearl, ASC, who put the filters through their paces with an intensive series of motion imaging tests. Vantage will incorporate Pearl’s input in the final edition of the Bethke Effect Filters.

The tests

The tests have been shot on ARRI Alexa Plus 4:3 and Hawk Front Anamorphic Zoom Lens 45-90mm/T2.8 – 1.3x Squeeze Equipment was provided from Vantage Film Germany.

Pearl, best known for his groundbreaking imagery in thousands of influential music videos and commercials, performed the tests in Hollywood with ARRI Alexa cameras and Hawk lenses. He used all ten filters with a wide variety of settings, including interiors, exteriors, night shots, and with a range of subject matter including highly reflective and variously colored objects.

“It’s fascinating to see how these filters break up and flare the light in unusual, unexpected ways”, says Pearl. “I file the different tests away in my mind, and when the right situation arises – when it’s right for the story or the feeling I’m after – I’ll know exactly how to achieve the effect.”

The Bethke Effect Filters use a surprising array of colors and materials to create interesting image abstractions, including diamond dust, fine metal needles, and glass in varying shapes and sizes, including pearls, filaments and cylinders. The effect can be subtle or strong, depending on the light, the lens and other factors.

“The people at Vantage are some of the most forward-thinking motion picture equipment designers and inventors of our time”, says Pearl. “Throughout my career, I’ve always sought out ways to do what has never been done with motion imaging, and they are constantly coming up with brilliant ideas and tools that help me do that.”
