Top Cinematography Writer Joins Hawk

Vantage, Makers of Hawk Lenses, to Join Forces with Acclaimed Journalist David Heuring as Brand Ambassador

Vantage Film, the innovative lensmaker and global equipment rental company, is proud to announce that David Heuring, one of the cinematography community’s most experienced and esteemed writers, will join the Vantage/Hawk team in the role of Brand Ambassador.

“David’s reputation in our industry is impressive, and his trusted relationships with the very best filmmakers around the world are unmatched,” says Vantage Founder and CEO Peter Martin. “David brings a deep and innate understanding of how cinematographers think and create. We’re thrilled that he has agreed to bring those skills to Vantage. World class glass deserves world-class representation.”

As Brand Ambassador, Heuring’s goals will include outreach through his extensive network and strengthening liaisons with industry organizations like the American Society of Cinematographers, AMPAS, IATSE and SMPTE, as well as facilitating new business for Vantage.

“David’s knowledge of filmmaking technologies, combined with his deep understanding of how they are used creatively, strengthens our bond with filmmakers,” says Vantage Co-Founder and CEO Wolfgang Baumler. “In David, filmmakers see a kindred spirit, and that completes the circle for us.”

Heuring’s roots in cinematography go back to 1987, when he joined the editorial staff at American Cinematographer Magazine at age 27. Within five years, he became editor, modernizing and rejuvenating the venerable publication. In 1996, he joined Bob Fisher’s CCS/PR company, writing thousands of articles for Kodak’s In Camera Magazine. After 17 years with Kodak, he moved into freelancing, writing for a long list of film-related companies and publications including Directors Guild of America Quarterly, Variety, Hollywood Reporter. In 2015, IATSE Local 600 presented Heuring with the Technicolor William A. Fraker Award for Journalistic Contributions to the Art of Cinematography. Along the way he interviewed, wrote about and befriended countless cinematographers and camera professionals around the world.

“For me, the key to success has been to cultivate strong, trusting relationships with the cinematographers and to place those bonds above everything else,” says Heuring. “I’m deeply grateful to all the filmmakers who have generously shared their insight and creative thought processes. Now, through my alliance with Vantage and the Hawk brand, I’m looking forward to moving from words into action. I’m delighted to begin a new journey, helping filmmakers find the tools they need to execute their vision.

“Cinematographers who use Hawk lenses invariably love them,” says Heuring. “But Vantage’s worldwide rental operations mean that I can help connect filmmakers with any tools they need to achieve their visual goals. After 35 years of writing about cinematography, the prospect of directly helping filmmakers do their magic is exciting, to say the least. I look forward to this new chapter.”

Heuring’s legacy as the voice of the cinematographer will carry on, as he plans to continue writing about filmmakers and the creative process for Vantage as well as for other outlets like American Cinematographer, British Cinematographer and Variety.
