7th Festival of Slovene Film 2004. The winner is: RUŠEVINE - "The Ruins" - a film about a recognised theatre director creating a spectacular play which is supposed to outshine anything he did before. The film allows the audience a view of the secrets and tensions in the close world of a theatre company.
"The Ruins" received awards in nearly every category, notably vesna for best film, vesna for direction and vesna for photography.
Vantage equipped "The Ruins" with Hawk Anamorhpic lenses, the most advanced lens technology available today. Both director Janez Burger and cinematographer Simon Tanšek tremendously enjoyed working with Hawk Anamorphic Lenses - so much so, that Tanšek is going to use Hawk Anamorphics for his new film "Od Groba do Groba", directed by Jan Cvitkovic.
Here are some of their comments and reflections:

JANEZ BURGER on the screenplay:
This film was my way of dealing with a very specific question: What is love like in an egocentric world? Can love exist in a world where everybody pays attention only to him- or herself?
In this sense, "The Ruins" is a film about love - a film about people who would like to love, but are unable to. In a way, it is a film about emotional invalids. This film entered my life at a time of personal crisis, when I was dealing with feelings of disappointment and discontent.
JANEZ BURGER on Hawk Anamorphic Lenses:
My comment on your lenses? My English is not good enough to prize their quality and perfection!

SIMON TANŠEK on the decision to use Hawk Anamorphic format:
During location scouting Janez and I had Hawk Anamorphic Lenses on our mind. This was partly due to the landscape: For exteriors we mostly used hills, beautiful 360 degrees of empty landscape.
Another reason for shooting anamorphic was the fact that 80 percent of the interior shootings were meant to convey a sense of anxiety and depression. On the other hand there was the feeling of freedom and eternal physical freedom ...
The same was true for the lighting. The story begins and ends in the interiors with depressed lighting.

SIMON TANŠEK on working with Hawk Anamorphics:
I used the Hawk Anamorphic series C - compact because we shot the whole film with a handheld camera. The camera was more or less documentary style, and we wanted the auditors to forget that they sat in a movie theatre. The film "Ruins" was my first widescreen film. Before the shooting I did a lot of camera tests, especially because we used special laboratory processing for the positive - ENR process. During the whole shooting I used natural lighting which led me to work with the T.stop 2.8. The quality and brilliant sharpness of the pictures I captured proved me right.
